Anybody know what the builders of Avebury looked like?

Apparently the inhabitants (or rather, the dead people) in a nearby long barrow had long skulls, high cheekbones, almost Amerindian in appearance.  Archaeologists reckon they were more likely to be dark than Nordic, so here's my first go at an Avebury sort of person.

Anyone recognise him?

Evudence of the Beaker People were found in Cornwall as well. It is believed that although there was widespread Celtic settlement, the genes from the original Neolithic migrants from the Adriatic persisted. This is presumably why there was a large proportion of the population who were dark haired, short and stocky, rather than fair haired and fair skinned like the Celts.

In fact the model used for this pic is half Sri Lankan! He just looked so much like the reconstructed faces from skulls found nearby that this was too good an opportunity to miss; in fact the builders of Avebury, as opposed to the subsequent users of the monument, belong to the wave of migration before the Beaker people. This is a pain in the you-know what, because we've got much more archaeological evidence for the Beaker folk - not least because they had the decency to bury their dead in graves (as has happened under some of the stones in the Avenue) I'll see how the time goes, but I might do a reconstruction of this sort of happening, too!

Hi Liz!

Yep, the man himself also knew who it was (see anonymous post above)!

Wonderful drawing, and what an enigmatic portrait.
