If you go to Ladysnail's Blog, you will find a Sock Man. He's a bit lonely at the moment, so here is my picture of the Sockeater from one of Terry Pratchett's novels (to my shame, I can't recall which one - if any of you out there recognise the character, please let me know!).
At first I thought he might make the Sock Man a bit nervous, but then I realised that actually they're both made of socks, and for all I know, Sock Man probably eats them too. Maybe Ladysnail could enlighten us!
So there we are - two mysteries in one post!

Hi Cathy
Love the expression of your sock monster. What medium did you use? Wasn't there a Sock Monster in the Hogfather. I seem to remember seeing one in the film they showed on Sky One, when various mythical characters started popping into existence.
How are things? Have you finished with college now?

Thanks Chris and Ladysnail!
The Sockeater is actually done using coloured pencils over a watercolour wash - and Chris, I think you're right about the Hogfather - its certainly the one where mythical creatures keep coming into existence, which the wizards regarded as 'not hygienic'!
I loved the concept of this creature being responsible for the missing partners of all those single socks we have!
What other mythical creatures might we accidentally wish into existence?
I'm rather afraid of the Tail Light Fairy. She's the one who breaks the bulb in your car's rear light whilst it's parked overnight so only one side works. She must exist - you can see the evidence every time you drive up the M40!

Yup, it's Hogfather - I think that the disappearance of the Hogfather creates a belief vacuum, so there's lots of spare belief washing around which can be used up for sock-eaters and verucca-fairies and the like. I love your sock-eater, he looks just right.
Our house has some sort of sock-demon variant - you always get the same number (or more) socks out the washer but they never match any more. The other day I *handwashed* three pairs of socks, and ended up with one pair and five odd ones :(
Liz - I've always been convinced that mathematicians can work magic, and you have demonstrated this yet again!!
Hi Cathy,
Fantastic sock-eater! Love his stripes!
When will we see the Baldness Fairy or the God of Hangovers?!
Jen :)
PS. I have recently acquired a small furry friend... a hamster called Fidget.

Hell, yeah - I'm like a new superhero. Whenever there's crime, disorder and fear you can guarantee I'll save the day by flying in and, er, messing up the bad guy's sock collection.
Hi Cathy,
Come see my blog for a picture of my newest Fidgety family member...
Jen :)
PS - did you get my email? Not sure if I got the right address!
